Strategies for Writing an Effective Conclusion | Writing

Think of an essay as a picture hanging on a wall. Wouldn’t the picture look unfinished without a frame around it?

While the body of an essay holds the main ideas, the introduction and conclusion frame the essay’s thoughts – providing support, flow, and connection to the entire essay. Today we will focus on conclusions.

For the TASC Test Assessing Secondary Completion™ Writing subtest, it’s important you know how to write an effective conclusion. Here are three strategies to help you end your essay on a cohesive, powerful note:

  1. Bring the essay full circle.

A conclusion is a way to demonstrate the importance of your essay’s main points. Summarize your essay’s main theme without restating every point word-for-word. Briefly show how your ideas fit together and why they matter.

  1. Present a course of action.

Providing a practical solution or presenting a call to action brings your essay’s main ideas to life. To have a lasting impact on readers, use your conclusion to show how the information in your essay applies to the real world and how readers can make a difference.

  1. Point to a broader association.

Show how your essay’s main theme applies to a bigger picture. Maybe your essay discusses the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Position your conclusion to highlight how the U.S. Civil Rights Movement helped shape the country we live in today.

The goal of a conclusion is to resonate with readers long after they’ve finished reading. Find free resources to help you practice writing conclusions at Time4Writing.com.
